Vorarlberg is in no doubt famous for its architecture paired with contemporary art. In a symbiotic relationship between the two, Kunsthaus Bregenz designed by Peter Zumthor offers a unique art program in its light flooded exhibition spaces that is not to be missed. Additionally, Bosnian artist Azra Akzamija’s wood curtain at the Islamic Cemetery references and pays respect to religious traditions of the Islamic faith.

BUS:STOP | Krumbach, Vorarlberg
Tapping into Vorarlberg’s traditions, building culture and craftsmanship, architecture from 7 different countries designed 7 different bus stops in Krumbach. Creating small usable spaces for the public good. This bold project was initiated in collaboration with Architekturzentrum Wien (AZW) and the Vorarlberger Architektur Institut (vai). The seven bus stops huts were built in close cooperation with local craftsmen and regional partner architects. They stand now as a reminder of the power of traditional materials, clever craftsmanship and the beauty of the local landscape, factors which shape the entire region. They are a testimony to the spirit of collaboration in harmony with people and nature, tradition and modernity, craftsmanship and building culture.

Werkraum Bregenzerwald by Atelier Peter Zumthor and Partner, Haldenstein

The Werkraum Bregenzerwald is an association of more than ninety master-craftsmen and businesses, whose buildings point the way forward for the culture of craft techniques. The municipality provided a plot of land next to the old station in a central position located directly on the main road – everything brought together under one huge roof in the middle of the valley. A venue and showcase – gala area and exhibition space. The building is an eloquent testimony to the importance of the regional craft culture and the sense of purpose and willingness of the craftspeople to rise to the challenges of our time through their affiliation with the Werkraum Bregenzerwald, while retaining their innovative flair by collaborating with architects and designers.
Kunsthaus Bregenz | Karl-Tizian-Platz, 6900 Bregenz
Kunsthaus Bregenz is an institute for the presentation of outstanding contemporary art that is active internationally. Thanks to its ambitious exhibition program and its unique architecture, the Kunsthaus is also internationally renowned amongst aficionados of both art and architecture. It was designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor on behalf of the Austrian Federal State of Vorarlberg and was constructed between 1990 and 1997. Artists are invited to respond to the buildings’ architecture or to even enter into a symbiosis with it. For this reason, a large part of the work on display has been created on site and especially for the institution. Kunsthaus Bregenzs’ exhibitions and projects enable artists’ ideas to become reality. The boundaries of both what is feasible and imaginable continually shift with each exhibition.
Islamic Cemetery | Scheffelstraße 4, 6844 Altach
The cemetery, as historically the first garden, is the overarching idea for this burial ground for members of the Islamic faith. Designed by Bernardo Bader from 2007-2012 and managed by the municipality of Altach, it offers space for some 700 graves. The cemetery was designed following Islamic rules and, in addition to a burial ground, features a room for ritual washings, a covered area for leave-taking, and a prayer room. Obeying the rite, the dead are buried lying on their side, heads facing Mecca. The Bosnian artist Azra Akzamija designed the prayer room and an artistic curtain made from wood shingles which, following Islamic building tradition, features the inscriptions “Allah“ and “Muhammad“. The large-scale massive oak latticework can be seen prominently from the entrance.
Schanerloch Bridge | 6850 Ebnit
The Schanerloch Bridge by Marte.Marte Architects runs through the Schanerloch gorge and is part of the impressive road from the city of Dornbirn to the hamlet of Ebnit. The bridge is picturesquely situated by the well of the river Dornbirner Ache and at the foot of scenic mountains. The spectacular route to this ancient settlement area is characterised by a series of natural rock tunnels and stone bridges.
2226 | Lustenau, Austria
What is the role for human intervention in an office building that has dispensed with all its heating, ventilation and cooling technology? The answer lies at 2226, an HQ building set in Lustenau’s Millennium Park. In a building that is a functioning part of its environment rather than just “architecture”, the choice of name is no accident: the ambient temperature inside is a constant 22°C to 26°C. The only heat sources it contains are there for other purposes, from the users themselves – every individual gives off an average of 80 watts of heat – to lights, computers and photocopiers, even coffee machines.

Concrete Egg by the building contractors Oberhauser & Schedler Bau GmbH, Andelsbuch and Tomaselli Gabriel Bau GmbH, Nenzing is a gigantic egg on a meadow. This trade fair exhibit has a height of 5.75 metres and can be entered through a door on the side.
Kunstraum Dornbirn | Jahngasse 9, 6850 Dornbirn
Kunstraum Dornbirn was founded in 1987 as a private association with the aim of presenting and communicating contemporary art. Since 2003, the exhibitions in the historic assembly hall of the former Rüschwerke machine factory in the Dornbirn Municipal Gardens have afforded superb conditions for the presentation of largescale installations. The raw quality of the original architecture provides an ideal space for exhibiting current trends in international art. A maximum of four exhibitions per year are devoted to showing both established, internationally renowned and new, up-and-coming artists.
